The G-Class is one of the most expensive Mercedes-Benz models on the market, but does it come equipped with cup holders?
Since 2020, the G-Class has come equipped with subtle cupholders in the cabin, and optional cupholders in the rear passenger compartment. Prior to that, they featured bizarre cup holders, reminiscent of small basketball hoops. There is also a range of aftermarket cupholders available.
Read on to learn more about the impressive G-Class, and its not-so-impressive cup holders.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class – or ‘G-Wagen’ – has a considerable legacy behind it. It was first released in 1979 as a rigorous and practical utility vehicle and grew massively from there.
Today, it’s a luxurious, high-performance SUV, boasting an impressive specification, and limitless ability. It’s also one of the most expensive production Mercedes-Benz models on the market.
What started as a utilitarian-military vehicle in the seventies evolved into a beast-like civilian SUV in a matter of months. It took years for the development to mature, but when it did, it came on in leaps and bounds.
By the eighties, the G-Class would boast air conditioning, extra fuel tanks, winches, and a comfortable interior. The model became a staple favorite for fans, and it received a considerable facelift in the nineties.
Since 1992, the G-Class has remained mostly the same in appearance. It’s a timeless construction, exuding power, and offroad ability with ease.
To put it simply, there’s almost no competition for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. While there are vehicles of a similar size and specification, nothing can go toe-to-toe with the German-engineered marvel.
For example, there’s the Range Rover, the Maserati Levante, or the Porsche Cayenne. However, all of these vehicles are built almost solely for luxury and wealth, and can’t match the sheer ability of the G-Wagen.
Reportedly, the G-Class has incredible off-road capabilities, driven majorly by its super-powered engine. The lowest level of G-Class boasts a turbocharged 4.0-liter, V8 engine.
If you’d like to invest in one of these entry-level vehicles, it will cost you over one hundred thousand dollars.
The Multi-Function Machine
Although it doesn’t come without its pitfalls, the G-Class is a vehicle used for many purposes. It’s an accomplished off-road explorer, a military staple, and a civilian masterpiece.
The cabin is described as ‘sumptuous’, and ‘lavish’, having been crafted with the finest materials and latest technology.
And of course, this includes subtle but effective cupholders, which can be found in the center console, or in the rear passenger compartment.
In theatres of conflict, the United States Marine Corps has been known to use the G-Class as a rapid response vehicle. The immensely-powerful engine and adaptable body make it perfect for this kind of use.
Mercedes-Benz also created a ‘flatbed’ version of the G-Class. They removed the rear seats and the trunk and replaced it with a bed, capable of carrying more cargo.
The G-Class also functions as a massively expensive and extravagant piece of equipment. In 2017, a variant was constructed and released that set the record for the world’s most expensive SUV.
It was the Mercedes-Benz Maybach G-Class, a particularly impressive model at the top of its class. It was stated to meet the ‘highest demands for luxury’, but still be fully practical and functional.
The interior was quite simply incredible, boasting a seemingly endless specification. Incredibly, Mercedes-Benz increased their offering with a triple-axle, 6×6 AMG variant of the Maybach.
This variant was a very limited run, with just two hundred being built. They were sold very exclusively and were priced at almost half a million dollars each.
The Top of the Class
As we’ve stated, there are very few competitors to the G-Class. In the United States, vehicles such as the Lincoln Navigator, Lexus LX, and Toyota Land Cruiser are more ‘budget’ competitors.
While the G-Class will cost you over one hundred thousand dollars, these vehicles are available for a substantially lower price. For example, the Lincoln Navigator will set you back around seventy thousand dollars, brand new.
It’s a classic vehicle and boasts a larger road presence than the G-Class, but it’s not as luxurious. The only competitor that really comes close is the Range Rover, which starts at around eighty thousand dollars.
So, while the G-Class is a considerable investment, you can sample the ‘luxury SUV’ range for a little less. Alternatively, you could consider hiring the G-Class.
There are many outlets across America that will let you have a small taste of the practical luxury of the G-Wagen for a lower cost.
