Cartier Love Rings are considerably expensive, exclusive, and above all else, unique. Is it possible to resize one, though?
Cartier Love Rings can be resized, but it is highly recommended that only Cartier actually resizes them. They’re made with a unique design that can easily be ruined if you resize your ring incorrectly, and making the ring bigger is almost never advised.

Read on to learn more about Cartier, the importance of the Love Ring line, and how much they tend to cost.
The Age-Old Jeweler
Cartier is a remarkably old company, having first been founded in Paris almost two hundred years ago. Today, it is one of the leading manufacturers of high jewelry, watches, and accessories – it’s a considerably luxurious brand adored by many.
Reportedly, Cartier is so prolific that it has long had ties to royalty, with Great Britain’s King Edward VII once referring to Cartier as the ‘king of jewellers’. When Louis-Francois Cartier founded the company in 1847, he’d been working as a jeweler and clockmaker for several years.
He pioneered the Cartier name, constructing innovative creations that revolutionised the watch- and clockmaking industries. In 1909, his son, Pierre Cartier, relocated to New York City, opening the first branch of Cartier in the United States.
Although the family business would pass away from the Cartiers by the mid-twentieth century, the brand itself would persist and continue pleasing fans the world over. The Cartier name is still synonymous with luxury, a timeless style, and a classic aesthetic.
Cartier is also well known for manufacturing (or adapting) some dramatically expensive pieces of jewelry. For example, a Jadeite necklace that sold at auction for almost thirty million dollars was a Cartier creation.
As was the ‘Sunrise Ruby Ring’, a twenty-five million dollar, twenty-five-carat Burmese ruby that was affixed to a beautiful white gold ring. The ring was crafted by Cartier’s expert jewelers, and it remains one of the most expensive rubies ever sold at auction.
In fact, if there’s one thing Cartier is known for, it’s probably the luxurious and exuberant rings that are commonplace throughout the company’s history. Cartier’s rings tend to be dramatically unique, striking, and ultimately, extravagant.
Louis Cartier, Pierre’s brother, created the ‘trinity ring’ in 1924, a moveable ring that was composed of three individual bands, all a different hue of gold. Today, this remains one of Cartier’s most iconic ring-based creations.
Expressing Love Through Cartier
Another iconic Cartier creation is the Love ring, allegedly created by Aldo Cipullo in New York, in 1969. Cipullo was also behind the ‘Juste un Clou’ design, which translates to ‘only a nail’, a somewhat humorous and iconic design.
Put simply, it is just a nail, but it’s one that is crafted from gold and bent into the shape of a ring, or a bracelet. The Love design, however, was a simply beautiful creation that looked the same whether it was a ring or a bracelet.
However, while the Cartier Love ring is just a ring, the bracelet is something else entirely. The Cartier Love bracelet came equipped with a miniature screwdriver that was used to secure the bracelet to the wrist in such a way that it couldn’t be removed.
It was made as a symbolic reference to the undying love that one person has for another, always present and sometimes unavoidable. They were originally designed to be purchased in pairs, with a couple wearing one each at the same time.
The rings, while unique, don’t go quite as far as being secured with a screwdriver, as you might imagine. Instead, they’re a simple slip-on, slip-off style akin to basically every other ring on the planet.
Although, the uniqueness of the design means that it’s difficult to resize the ring without damaging or defacing it in some way. Cartier advises that any adjustments to a Cartier Love ring are done by a Cartier professional.
They do also say that making a Cartier Love ring bigger is almost impossible, as it almost always involves stretching – and therefore weakening – the gold band. If you’re going to purchase a Cartier Love ring, you should make sure that your sizing is as accurate as possible.
With that in mind, Cartier does also advise that its Love rings tend to run a little small, and they’ve suggested that you select a size to accommodate that fact. If you’re buying a ‘medium’ model, you should run one to two sizes smaller, and two sizes smaller for the ‘large’ model.
Cartier Love rings can cost as much as twenty thousand dollars – so be sure about your sizing!
