Today, Louis Vuitton is synonymous with high fashion, expensive products, and a wealthy image. When the company was founded way back in 1854, it was with the goal of creating fine luggage and suitcases, but the company expanded its range relatively quickly.
These days, Louis Vuitton has a wide portfolio that includes handbags, clothing, accessories, and even homeware. However, if you’re in the market for a Louis Vuitton product, you’ll need to have some serious upfront capital, as these products are not for the average shopper.
Coach, on the other hand, was started in New York City in 1941, by a family who endeavored to create wallets and handbags. While Coach is nowhere near as big as Louis Vuitton, it’s an important and successful organization in its own right.
In 2019, Coach had around one thousand boutiques in the world, and it boasted a considerable range of products, like Louis Vuitton. It was a fan-favorite brand among fashion aficionados, even if it wasn’t at the level of Louis Vuitton.
According to the pyramid of fashion brands, Coach sits some way beneath Louis Vuitton, with the latter being ranked as an ‘aspirational’ brand. Coach, meanwhile, was ranked as a ‘premium’ brand, along with the likes of Guess, Huge Boss, and Diesel.

We ventured into the online realms of both these brands to determine which was the cheaper label overall. Firstly, we compared men’s coats and jackets, examining both Coach and Louis Vuitton to see who had the more affordable offerings.
When we probed Coach’s offerings, we found coats for as little as four hundred dollars, with the high point sitting at around two and a half thousand dollars. However, Louis Vuitton’s offerings started at around thirteen hundred dollars and climbed to as much as thirty thousand dollars.
Next, we looked at handbags, arguably the most popular category for both of these brands, and an area that both labels have excessive experience in. In this category, Coach was actually remarkably affordable, with small clutch bags starting at just one hundred dollars.
At the highest end of the Coach handbag spectrum, you’d be paying just over two thousand dollars for a snakeskin bag. Conversely, Louis Vuitton’s handbags start at almost two thousand dollars and easily climb into the tens of thousands of dollars.
And of course, let’s not forget the Louis Vuitton Urban Satchel, a one-of-a-kind handbag that came with a price tag of $150,000.
Finally, we looked at jewelry, and again we identified a similar trend. The most expensive items of jewelry on Coach’s website topped out at around two hundred dollars, while Louis Vuitton’s high end climbed far beyond ten thousand dollars.
It seems that the end result is clear – Louis Vuitton certainly is the more expensive label, with Coach falling some way behind in the overall price stakes. However, Louis Vuitton is much more a status symbol, and its fans are more than happy to part ways with exorbitant amounts of money to own its products.
Coach, however, maintains a more accessible image overall, and while it’s not too affordable, it is a considerably more attainable brand than Louis Vuitton. It depends whether you prefer the monogrammed ‘C’ of Coach or the monogrammed ‘LV’ of Louis Vuitton.
