Are Rolls-Royces Hand-Made?

Few would argue there are more luxurious cars in the world than Rolls-Royces. These premium vehicles have a reputation for outstanding craftsmanship, attention to detail, high-quality materials and components, and a huge variety of customization options.

Every Rolls-Royce vehicle is made by hand in the brand’s production facilities at Goodwood in West Sussex. Customers can also opt for Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke service for enhanced customization, which offers an almost unlimited array of options to tailor their handcrafted car to their exact requirements.

While the Rolls-Royce Company’s history dates back to 1906, BMW formed Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as a subsidiary in 1998 after they obtained licensing rights for the brand name Rolls-Royce. The Rolls-Royce production facility at Goodwood was established in 2003 and it is here that every Rolls-Royce is crafted by hand.

An impressive facility for vehicles made to impress

Goodwood is located within West Sussex in England. Fitting for the outstanding vehicles produced here, Goodwood is an award-winning facility that was designed to create minimal environmental impact while incorporating a range of innovative features in its design.

The main building at Goodwood is actually set two meters below the surrounding ground level, a design choice that helps the building blend into the surrounding landscape. The building also features the largest living roof in the UK.

The roof has a covering of sedum plants that provide a range of benefits including improving the insulation of the building, reducing rainwater runoff, as well as providing camouflage to aid the building in blending in with its surroundings.

The Assembly Hall at Goodwood features floor-to-ceiling windows running along its length in order to provide natural light for the craftspeople inside the building. It also enables visitors to view the entire production line.

Goodwood even features timber louver panels that are activated by a weather station situated on the roof. These panels control the amount of light that enters the building, helping Rolls-Royce reduce their electricity needs.

Rolls-Royce also recycles over 60% of its waste and composts all of its green waste.

Luxury that’s made to order

Every Rolls-Royce vehicle is made to order and customers can benefit from an incredible range of customization options. In fact, the sheer number of options available makes almost every Rolls-Royce a bespoke vehicle.

Creating each car from start to finish, from the initial designs to the finished vehicle, is a painstaking process that involves the expertise of sixty engineers, craftspeople, sculptors, and colorists. The entire process can take 800 hours to complete, with all of it happening in one facility dedicated to crafting exceptional luxury.

For customers who want a truly unique car, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke service is ready to create the ultimate car of their dreams. Almost every aspect of a Rolls-Royce can be customized to individual preferences, from premium bespoke leather and custom woodwork to one-off artistic details.

Rolls-Royce’s Starlight Headliner allows customers to enjoy a custom constellation within the car interior. The constellation can be meticulously crafted to relate to a specific date such as a birthday or anniversary and is made with fiber optic lighting.

The Rolls-Royce coachline is the last aesthetic detail to be added to vehicles before they leave Goodwood. While not every car will have a coachline, for those that do, completing the coachline is a demanding and exacting task that is done by the same craftsman each time.

Mark Court uses custom-made brushes to paint the coachline by hand. It can take over three hours to paint the coachline, after which any additional requested details will be added by the same craftsman.

Rolls-Royce offers over 44,000 color options and can create custom colors based on specific items, from lipstick to pet colors and more. The paint itself can be further customized by adding materials to it to achieve particular effects, such as a customer who requested crushed diamonds be added to the paint to give it a sparkling effect.

While the exterior color and interior finishes are customizable, each Rolls-Royce can also be customized further with additional items such as display boxes for owners’ valuable personal possessions, luxurious picnic hampers, champagne coolers, and much more. Imagination really is the limit when it comes to creating a bespoke Rolls-Royce.

Of course, that imagination also requires a healthy bank balance. Standard Rolls-Royce cars are luxuriously priced to begin with and bespoke vehicles can cost significantly more.
