Moncler and Canada Goose are two of the finest brands in luxury outdoor and winter clothing, but which brand is best?
If you’re looking for practicality, durability, and above all, warmth, then Canada Goose is the brand to go for. It’s cheaper than Moncler by some distance, more readily available, and extremely high quality. By contrast, Moncler is more expensive, exclusive, and more fashionable than practical.
Read on to learn more about Moncler and Canada Goose, and their battle to be at the top of the outdoor clothing ranks.
Braving The Cold
In the last one hundred years or so, the outdoor clothing industry has seen as many innovations as any other. The days of the human race hunting and skinning animals to keep warm are behind us by several millennia.
For the most part, humans have always been susceptible to cold conditions, with the exception of the hardier examples born into snow and ice. Although, there are plenty who will go their entire lives without seeing snow, or feeling the cold.
However, since the dawn of time, humans have tried to keep warm in the simplest way possible – by covering themselves up and putting on layers. Today, there are countless options to condition for the cold: coats, scarves, gloves, hats, masks, boots, and so on.
While some of these products have been commonplace for several centuries, winter coats have really only been a thing for around a century. Before the 1930s, the majority of the outdoor garments available were heavy jackets, such as pea coats, and thick, woolen clothing.
In fact, it was in 1936 that an American adventurer by the name of Eddie Bauer created the world’s first down jacket. His vision was that of a strong, durable, and practical jacket, one that would offer intense protection against the cold.
He pieced together a jacket that consisted of quilted fabrics that encased layers of feathers. It took a considerably long time to gain traction, with popularity storming in throughout the nineties, but it would come to be the de facto standard for winter coats.
Two Roads, Diverged
Today, the market is positively awash with down winter coats and jackets, with the ‘technology’ behind them having been advanced numerous times. Brands such as Moncler and Canada Goose are constantly innovating, with the competitive goal of creating the best coats available.
There are coats on the market that can keep you warm in staggeringly low temperatures, or offer breathability in warmer climates. Some modern coats come equipped with more storage than a backpack, or a versatile functionality that effectively makes them modular.
It’s an extremely competitive market, because, as we’ve already mentioned, the human race simply has to stay warm in colder climates. Although, this desire has diminished somewhat in recent years, in favor of winter coats being used more as a fashion statement than a practical option.
That’s certainly the case with Moncler, who offers stylish and luxurious coats, jackets, and accessories for dramatically high prices. While they’re considered one of the best outdoor clothing brands, it’s for reasons of exclusivity, image, and opulence.
Canada Goose, on the other hand, is known for the manufacture of durable, effective, and somewhat affordable coats and accessories. It’s the brand of choice for those seeking true protection from the cold, and a jacket that will outlast any condition it exists in.
Moncler’s creations can come with price tags of up to three or four thousand dollars, making them unaffordable for a huge majority of consumers. However, Canada Goose’s coats regularly retail for far less than a thousand dollars.
These more affordable products are also much more readily available, compared to Moncler, which is much more exclusive. According to industry experts, Canada Goose also uses slightly finer materials in the construction of their coats.
The international research analytics group, yougov.co.uk, ranks Canada Goose as the 159th most popular fashion choice. Moncler is a few steps behind, being ranked the 168th most popular.
To Spend, Or Not To Spend
Ultimately, it’s your money and your choice, but if you favor practicality and durability over fashion and style, Canada Goose is the obvious choice. It’s a more affordable brand, better rated, and much more available than Moncler.
However, if you want to hit the slopes while exuding opulence and extravagance, you should choose Moncler. These coats are statements of wealth, status, and above all, exclusivity; if that’s your goal, go for it.
Although the numbers speak for themselves – Canada Goose is more popular.
